Match Report
Sami thunder inspires NCSU victory

Sami Syed's furious spell of bowling helped NCSU trounce TCC in a low scoring encounter at the Lee Fields. Chasing 141 on a pitch with dubious bounce, the visitors were skittled out for 103 thanks largely to Sami's spell of 6-0-42-7.

Chasing with the ball darting around was always going to be awkward. But TCC's problems were compounded by the lack of substantial partnerships - often the key to chasing low totals - and a few soft dismissals. But to say that TCC batted below par or were undone by the pitch would be to undermine Sami's effort. NCSU won not because of the nature of the pitch, but because they had a man who knew exactly how to bowl on it.

Electing to bat after winning the toss, NCSU were on the receiving end of the pitch's unpredictable bounce. Before long, 2 wickets were down and Swapnil and Cashif had to lower their gear to survive some hostile bowling from Aravind Narayanan and Vijay Jagannath. Cashif tried to up the ante with some meaty blows but fell to a clever piece of bowling from Shibu. Wickets started tumbling thereon and soon NCSU were staring down at an embarassing collapse. But they found their men for the occasion - Hiren Patel and Hiten Mehta - stringing together a most valuable partnership. But once Hiten fell to Nataraj, the remaining batsmen folded in and NCSU were bowled out for 140 in just 24 overs.

What should have then been a fairly easy chase proved out not to be so. Sami struck the right note in the very first over by getting rid of the openers, both hurrying onto their shots and falling to some smart catching by Raj and Vivek. Naseer and Shibu then tried to build a partnership and played some aggressive shots. Naseer was lucky to be dropped twice but he was the unlucky victim to a ball that stayed low. Shibu fell flicking the ball from Sami straight to square leg and Anand was trapped plumb in front of the stumps. An over later, the captain Rajesh holed-out to mid-on and within no time, TCC were in disarray with 6 of their batsmen back in the pavilion. Vijay and Nataraj then hung out for a few overs with Nataraj surviving a few close shouts. Just as they were getting used to the pitch and with TCC hoping that this partnership would bail them out, a mid-pitch confusion resulted in Nataraj getting run-out. Sami then came back into the attack and removed Vijay to claim his 5th wicket in the game. Raj Uchil then went on the offensive and found the boundary more than once but with no batsmen left to support him, he eventually perished trying to attack Sami.

In a low-scoring game with extras bettering any of the batsmen, Sami Syed stood out for his outstanding bowling display. He was the difference between the two teams today. And that made all the difference.

NCSU would like to propose Captain, Sami for the player of the week.
