Match Report TCC defeated PACC by virtue of having a better run-rate in a rain-curtailed game at Hobson’s on Sunday.
PACC is a well-respected opponent in our league and having been at the losing end on two occasions last season, we weren’t exactly considered the favorites, especially while playing in their den. Rain was in the forecast for late afternoon. TCC’s stand-in skipper Vijay won the toss and decided to bat first without any hesitation. Ravi and Aravind provided a solid platform for us adding 50 odd runs before Aravind holed out to long-on for a well-made 36. Shibu joined Ravi in the middle, but the latter was caught by Nasir on the long-on fence trying to loft leggie Atikur out for a six. We lost a few quick wickets and that pegged the run-rate back. However, Shibu was all class at one end making run scoring look easy with his silken touch. Sundar stayed with him for awhile, but we folded eventually for 159. Shibu top-scored with 44 runs and that turned out to be a match-winning knock. PACC fielded well and held on to some very good catches. 159 seemed like a decent score, but given PACC’s penchant for chasing big totals, we had to bowl and field well to have any chance of winning.
The local Subway outlet saw an unusual peak in “footlong” orders, so the delay in getting sandwiches gave us a good 45-min break. Aravind and Vijay opened the bowling for TCC. No width was offered for the batters to have a go and pressure mounted on PACC. Thanks to Chakri’s good fielding and a quick return to Vijay, Waseem was run-out for 1. Atikur miscued drive off Aravind’s bowling was caught brilliantly by Uchil. Haroon had to consolidate given the quick wickets. Shibu was introduced within the first 10 overs and he responded right away by cleverly getting rid of Mansoor with a wrong ‘un. MACC President Bilal and Haroon seemed determined to get PACC through, but TCC’s nagging line and length made run-scoring difficult. Nutty bowled Bilal and then Amar held a blinder at short thirdman to dismiss Murtaza to give Nutty another prized scalp. It was a brilliant one-handed catch given that the ball was spinning. Nasir has shown time and again that he can be a match winner, so we were in no mood to let him settle in. Vijay brought himself on and softened Nasir up with a couple of short balls. Nasir holed out to Aravind at long-off off the very next ball. Aqeel was cleaned up by Vijay and it started to rain after a few minutes. Thankfully, we had just passed the 25-over mark by that time and going by MACC rules the HPCC umpires confirmed that we had won the match because of better net run-rate. PACC’s run-rate hovered around less than 3 runs throughout the innings. Overall, it was a fantastic bowling and fielding effort from TCC.
